Flotsam and Jetsam Opening Night 2018

Flotsam and Jetsam Opening Night 2018

The Flotsam and Jetsam 2018 Art Exhibition at Latitude Gallery Geraldton was officially opened by City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Mr Shane Van Styn Saturday 14th April 2018.

This exhibition started in 2011 with artists creating pieces from rubbish collected from the Abrolhos Islands of the coast of Geraldton, Western Australia by Pia Boschetti and a team of Volunteers.  This year over 4 Tonne of rubbish picked from the Abrolhos Islands over 3 days by 27 volunteers was bought back, and then collected from the wharf by local artists and combined to make over 90 pieces of work.

Each year the collecting of the rubbish has gotten more serious, while initially it started out as something fun to do, now it is truly about the ocean and the environment and keeping it as clean as we possibly can.

This exhibition is not just about creating artwork or upcycling, it is also about sustainability and doing every bit toward creating a clean environment. This is something that Pia Boschetti is extremely passionate about, as she is about keeping the Abrolhos Islands pristine.  It is a place she is very familiar with, being born into a lobster fishing family.

Pia loves hearing everyone’s journey about their art, about how therapeutic they say it is to make the artwork. One artist commented that it wasn’t perfect, Pia said “it’s Imperfectly perfect” – maybe that’s what we all are and makes us unique, what would happen if we took away our constant comparison to others.  With this exhibition, one of the reasons people like to enter is because we allow no judgement in the display process, all entries get displayed. Even by the people who don’t normally do art… and a wonderous thing it is.

Your are welcome to view the full collection in store or on our facebook page

All Entries are on display at Latitude Gallery, 169 Marine Terrace, Geraldton until 12th May 2018.
