Young Jeweller's Award

Young Jeweller's Award

I made it back from Queensland to our Geraldton jewellery gallery just in time for the opening of the 'Young Jeweller's Award'.  I was absolutely blown away by the collection pieces that were made by the students of two high schools in Geraldton.

This is the second year running of this award but this year another high school has joined in. So now the lucky schools involved are Nagle Catholic College and also Geraldton Secondary College.

How it works. Latitude Gallery donated 69 Black pearls from our own farm located at the Abrolhos Islands off the coast of Geraldton in Western Australia. you may think that 69 pearls may not seem much but in total the value was $10,500 worth of pearls. Each high school student selects a pearl that appeals to them then they design and create a piece of jewellery that shows off the pearl. All of their work is done at their school in their jewellery making course... and I'm pretty sure the students did a lot of overtime in their own time to complete these pieces as you can see their passion in each piece.

We held the opening night on the 24 June where over 200 people attended on the evening. The winners were announced and the public voted for their favourite piece.
The Principals Award winner was Laura Stevens
Young Jeweller of the Year Award was Chelsea Wing
The People's Choice Award was Mackenzie Bignell
The Gallery Choice Award was Lynic Papertalk

The teachers from both schools were so helpful and grateful with this project and we are going to support this program in the future.  To see all the proud kids, proud parents and proud teachers in the room you can only imaging how fantastic the evening was.
Promoting local artists in all forms is one of the most personally rewarding part of our business.

The exhibition will be running until the 31st of July, if you would like to see what wonderful pieces were created, just pop into Latitude Gallery Geraldton, 169 Marine Terrace. Or you can follow this link to view online
