Unravelling the long forgotten, sun-bleached ropes to reveal the bright kaleidoscope of colour hidden within, allowed me to bring her back to life. Prize - $800 Gift Voucher from Latitude Jewellers and earrings from the Kim Walkden collection.

Category - Artist View WINNER Artist - Rosalyn Kelly Title - "Windows of the Abrolhos" Story - The old barnacle encrusted alloy cylinder was amongst the rubbish. The four sides look like windows so I have told a story of the underwater scenes you may see at the Abrolhos. The crayfish, the snorkelling, the pearls, the sea lions and historic relics lying on the ocean floor from old shipwrecks. Aerial photos of the Abrolhos Islands inspired the view of Post Office Island on top of the dome. The dome sits on a post, with a rope, on a flat driftwood that mimics the islands that are so flat and part of an old cray pot frames it all. Spin the cylinder to see all four window views. Prize - $500 gift voucher from Karl Monaghan Photography and Framing and a $1000 Gift Voucher from Latitude Jewellers

Category - Recycling Award WINNER Artist - Pamela Riggs Title - "Jetsam Jetty Bird" Story - My love of creating quirky birds, the shape of the pot floats, colour and textures of the ropes allowing this piece to evolve as I put it together. Prize - Trip for two to the Abrolhos Islands with Geraldton Air Charter valued at $780 and a $1000 Gift Voucher from Latitude Jewellers

Category - Heritage Award WINNER Artist - Raylene Spencer & Aimee Rowland Title - "Crawling & Exploring" Story - The crayfish is a mysterious creature lurking in the depths of sea caves, his stalking beady eyes and rocky suit of armour is unique. Glamorous yet fierce and so much like the crusty sea rope that eventually captures him. Mum and I live 2 hours apart and we enjoy having a craft project, an excuse to spend some time together. Sifting through the rubbish collected by my brother as we were both away that weekend we talked about what it reminded us of. With all the tangled ropes, broken wood and bright red plastic bits of cray pots, it was when we found a weird little tube shape bit that we saw the body of a crayfish and it just kept evolving from there. Prize - $250 cash prize from Batavia Coast Maritime Association and a $250 Gift Voucher from Latitude Jewellers.

ARTWORK TITLE: Dottie Gull ARTIST: Rose Holdaway FOR SALE: $285 CATEGORY: Artist’s View ARTIST’S STATEMENT Some things lend themselves better to paint…

ARTWORK TITLE: Big Day ARTIST: Narelle Phillips FOR SALE: $500 CATEGORY: Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT A bride starting a new life on her wedding day, in a dress made from material being reused for a new purpose. ARTWORK TITLE: Frayed Knot ARTIST: Brittni Barlow FOR SALE: $300 CATEGORY: Artist’s View + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT On average, Australians use 130kgs of plastic per person each year. Only 9% of that’s recycled. More frightening still, up to 130,000 tonnes of plastic will find its way into our waterways and into the ocean. Will knowing this information make people start recycling? …. I’m a frayed Knot!

ARTWORK TITLE: Protect our Sea Lions ARTIST: Rosalyn Kelly FOR SALE: $170 CATEGORY: Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT I carved and sculptured a sea lion from the yellow foam board found at the jetty rubbish pile. The foam had a texture that looked like fur and I was inspired to make the sea lion. Cheers to the crew who cleaned up the Abrolhos this year!

ARTWORK TITLE: Artificial ARTIST: Stevie Fraser Age 15 FOR SALE: CATEGORY: Artist’s View + Junior Award ARTIST’S STATEMENT Just one plastic bag, who cares. 130,000 tonnes, nearly 53 Olympic sized swimming pools filled with rubbish. This is the estimated amount of plastic that ends up in Australian Waterways and the surrounding ocean per year. This number is minute compared to other larger countries such as Bangladesh who annually has 31 million tonnes that ends up in their waterways and China has 8.8 million tonnes. Because Australia’s contribution to plastic pollution is significantly lower much of the plastic pollution goes unnoticed. My artwork is about the overlooked effects of (Australia’s in particular) plastic pollution. Having much of the flotsam and jetsam component so scarce and hard to notice in my art is so that people must take a close look. Much like people must take a closer look at pollutions effects and how the ocean is slowly becoming more and more artificial and without our input it will continue this way. In 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans, if we don’t contribute to reducing our plastic use or picking it up before it reaches the ocean, or removing it from the ocean before it harms a marine animal. Just one plastic bag can cause the death or irreversible injury to marine animals. So next time a plastic bag or any other form of plastic waste is seen blowing around in our waterways, pick it up. Who could it murder?

ARTWORK TITLE: Heading Home ARTIST: Indiana Fraser age 12 FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Junior Award ARTIST’S STATEMENT I thought of this piece because when I went to Indonesia, I can remember seeing all the women cutting all the rice and them in the paddocks. The lady started because of the hat, and the hat was the bottom of a flagon, which is an old wine bottle. I made four of the ducks girls and one of them a boy. The drake is the one telling the lady off, because he doesn’t want to go to bed yet.
ARTWORK TITLE: Sea Bird Trio ARTIST: Luisa Stade FOR SALE: Not For Sale CATEGORY: Artist’s View ARTIST’S STATEMENT The inspiration for my Sea Bird Trio was timber collected from the Abrolhos Islands clean up. I love the weathered colour of driftwood and the textured knots and ridges engrained over time through wind and water erosion. I used sea glass to depict whimsical sea birds and the drift wood to represent a series of quirky nautical jetty scenes.

ARTWORK TITLE: Little Salty ARTIST: Rose Holdaway FOR SALE: $385 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Artist’s View ARTIST’S STATEMENT Little Salty has pieces from two different flotsam and jetsam collections. Sometimes good things take a while to come together. Perhaps an apt name would have been “Took a while crocodile”
ARTWORK TITLE: A plea from the Sea ARTIST: Jodie Gaspar FOR SALE: Not For Sale CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT My inspiration for this piece came from wanting to send a message about the devastating impact humans are having on our oceans. I felt like a Sea Warrior delivering a message in a bottle, a plea for help would be a meaningful way to do it. Currently there is over 150 million tonnes of plastic floating in our oceans. The ocean is home to more than 80% of ALL life on earth yet we still dump the equivalent of a garbage truck a minute of rubbish in it. This needs to change and we humans need to be that change.

ARTWORK TITLE: Men O’War ARTIST: Rayleen Spencer and Aimee Rowland FOR SALE: $140.00 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Artist’s View ARTIST’S STATEMENT Blue bottles drift onto shore much like the rubbish that has been collected. Ever avoiding their toxic sting while admiring the beauty in their vibrant colour
ARTWORK TITLE: Mermaid’s Dream ARTIST: Jessica Harvey FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT My artwork that I have created, reminds me of a magical underwater land. Looking at the materials I have, made me think of how to piece it all together to create a Chandelier Ocean theme. Less waste in the ocean.
ARTWORK TITLE: Crawling and Exploring ARTIST: Rayleen Spencer + Aimee Rowland FOR SALE: $290 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT The crayfish is a mysterious creature lurking in the depths of sea caves, his stalking beady eyes and rocky suit of armour is unique.
ARTWORK TITLE: Covid Cocktail Hour ARTIST: Lis Turner FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT Inspired by the wearable art theme and using black rope to make a simple black number, the entire piece has no glue, it is all sewn together with unravelled rope. I made the mesh on the LGBTQI+ awareness day, hence the coloured stripe on it.

ARTWORK TITLE: Jumbo Jelly ARTIST: Sara Ramsay FOR SALE: Make Me an Offer CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT I wanted to let the materials help me decide on what to create. (perfect owl nose). He’s mounted on a t-shirt, made of old deck carpet to fit with the wearable theme this year.
ARTWORK TITLE: Jimmy the Jellyfish ARTIST: Oscar Age 5 FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Junior Award ARTIST’S STATEMENT I wanted to make a jellyfish because I’m interested in them. I painted Jimi orange because its my favourite colour.

ARTWORK TITLE: Masquerade Ball Mask ARTIST: Nicola Fraser FOR SALE: $180 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT This mask was inspired by a piece of lay flat hose that I picked up at the flotsam and jetsam pick up. It not only makes the mask itself but it is also part of its feather like features. I was lucky enough to find some old ribbon and balloons in some rope which I have used to make the masks tie. So that the mask is able to be worn. Also this makes the mask 100% flotsam and jetsam only additionally using paint and glue to pull the mask together. My challenge was to make something wearable, unique and pretty out of rubbish, not renown for any of those qualities. I feel I have managed this and cant stop imagining what fun a masquerade ball would be like to attend.
ARTWORK TITLE: The Islander ARTIST: Carol-Anne White FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Artist’s View + Wearable Art + Junior Award ARTIST’S STATEMENT Amongst all the flotsam and jetsam, she found a rope knot, turning it over she thought it looked like a human heart. It got her wondering if the oceans had sent a more personal message, as if the plastic tide wasn’t enough. The Islander is wearing an outfit made totally from the Abrolhos Islands flotsam and jetsam. A single strip of striped marine carpet was used in its entirety and the grey hues have been brightened and lightened with circles of rope stitched together in a joyful display of colours. Whimsical rope threads drift out to the shoulders, a tribute to the windswept islands. A solitary sock completes the skirt and the fingerless glove. Accessories include a headpiece adapted from the inside of a safety hat and a plastic bucket strap supporting a tin lid makes an exaggerated necklace feature. Matching amulets and simple rings compliment the outfit. In her left hand the Islander carries a couple of hookless lures and considers how to repurpose them, for surely with all human knowledge in 2021 everything can be used again – can’t it?
ARTWORK TITLE: Owl T-Shirt ARTIST: Nicki Wyatt FOR SALE: $190.00 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT The owl came about because of the 2 eyes I found, then I was lucky enough to find his nose which is an old squid jig. ARTWORK TITLE: Namrus Houtalias (Halfmoon Songbird) ARTIST: Corrinna Doust FOR SALE: $389 CATEGORY: Artist’s View + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT Inspired by the hard work and dedication of marine biologist Christopher Surman. Some say the sound is that of the sirens, though, if you listen closely, you will hear the plea of the Halfmoon Songbird, as she calls upon humanity to care a little less for ourselves and a little more for Mother Earth.

ARTWORK TITLE: Necklace 1 ARTIST: Sarah Hinton FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT Who doesn’t love statement jewellery? Especially one inspired by the sea. I love colour and pops of bright, so was pleased (but so saddened) to see colourful ropes. If you pull it tight around your neck, its almost like being a seabird and feeling that same feeling of suffocation, when birds get our rubbish caught around their neck.

ARTWORK TITLE: Who’s gonna make the gravy ARTIST: Anne-Maree Hopkinson FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT Oh Christmas tree, Oh Christmas tree how lovely are your recycled wood branches!

ARTWORK TITLE: Imperfectly Beautiful ARTIST: Melissa Ryan-Holmes FOR SALE: $200 CATEGORY: Artist’s View + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT My Grandmother was a Milliner, which has inspired me to create a fascinator. I drew inspiration from the seascape items such as the fishing lures, floats and mesh, together with the multitude of plastics that find their way into our oceans. I was excited to make something that was old, new again.

ARTWORK TITLE: Surface Pearls ARTIST: Tim Carrier FOR SALE: $150 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT The Surface Pearl Necklace and display bust have been hand carved from damaged cray pot floats. ARTWORK TITLE: Kelpie ARTIST: Janine Glasson FOR SALE: $65 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT The Kelpie is an unseelie water horse of predominantly Scottish mythology. He shape shifts into most commonly a pretty pony and occasionally a very attractive young man. Once patted or touched the victim becomes gived/adhered to the Kelpie. The Kelpie then reverts to its original shape and drags the stuck prey into the depths.

ARTWORK TITLE: The Lure ARTIST: Carol-Anne White FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Artist’s View + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT Women are attracted to pretty shiny things, let’s be honest we desire them. Humans, just like fish can also be lured to chase things bright and flashy. Especially if it appears in the right colour, size and shape for them. There are no hooks on this enticing piece. You will see the snake, but can you see the apple? She wants to lead you to temptation, do you long to touch? She wants to capture your time; do you want to look more closely? She desires intimacy if only you will stop to explore her precious and fascinating second skin. Will you eagerly take the bait? Made entirely from a second-hand mannequin, my preloved beads, plus many donated by friends or purchased as whole pieces from op shops in Geraldton and Dongara. Perhaps you will recognise some.

ARTWORK TITLE: Daddy’s Home ARTIST: Peter Berryman FOR SALE: $350 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT Hats are an essential item in the harsh conditions of the Abrolhos Islands.

RTWORK TITLE: Abrolhos Bride ARTIST: Beverley Hanrahan FOR SALE: $300 CATEGORY: Artist’s View + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT This headpiece evolved as I unraveled this beautiful rope into strands. I imagined a beauty from the sea breaking out of the waves with her flowing mane of hair cascading, entwined with lace and precious jewels.

ARTWORK TITLE: Sun Smart ARTIST: Amanda & Frank Miragliotta FOR SALE: $800 CATEGORY: Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT What came to mind for “wearable art” while driving to the wharf for collection was a simple hat. We then spotted a magnificent piece of driftwood…. You can see there is one flat face but all the other edges have been rounded (makes you wonder how long it had been drifting in the ocean). It was the perfect piece to create a hat stand to display the hat! As we learned, the octopus is highly intelligent…. So smart in fact that he’s climbing up to get the hat.

ARTWORK TITLE: Choking ARTIST: Jules Camerer FOR SALE: $250 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT Shifting focus to the long term environmental impacts of the pandemic. Are we choking our future?

ARTWORK TITLE: In the Box ARTIST: Sandra Cousins FOR SALE: $200 CATEGORY: Artist’s View ARTIST’S STATEMENT In the box, out the box or even lay in the box. Its all about the box. Love the natural colour of this box. A very flexible hand that can be positioned anywhere easily…… Medium: wire, glass fabric, air plant and selenite.

ARTWORK TITLE: Whale Shark nju ARTIST: Xander Green age 8 FOR SALE: $25 CATEGORY: Junior Award ARTIST’S STATEMENT I looked at the float and it looked like a Whale Shark. I cut his fins and tail from a plastic bottle.

ARTWORK TITLE: Movement of the Ocean ARTIST: Glenda Blythe FOR SALE: $60 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT Old rope has always inspired me to make baskets. The weathering effects on the rope enhances its enduring qualities and when combined with recycled fishing lines, it produces a sustainable product.

I placed a piece of net over his head and flippers to show his “wearable” net cape – worn by chance and not by choice. Keep our oceans clean for the sake of the wildlife and fish. Cheers to the crew who cleaned up the Abrolhos this year!

Cheers to the crew who cleaned up the Abrolhos this year!

ARTWORK TITLE: Bronzie on the Prowl ARTIST: Rosalyn Kelly FOR SALE: $220 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling ARTIST’S STATEMENT I found some old rusty and crusty iron sheeting with wonderful colours and patina. The colour and scaley surface made me think of fish scales and the colour of a Bronzie, a Bronze Whaler Shark. This shark is a fearsome predator of the ocean in and around the Abrolhos. The Bronzie can grow up to 3.5metres in length and weigh up to 300kg. He is not aggressive but potentially dangerous if you are spearfishing. Watch out – Bronzie is on the prowl!

ARTWORK TITLE: Windows of the Abrolhos ARTIST: Rosalyn Kelly FOR SALE: $330 CATEGORY: Artist’s View ARTIST’S STATEMENT The old barnacle encrusted alloy cylinder was amongst the rubbish.

ARTWORK TITLE: The Old Ship ARTIST: Jay Furukawa Age 12 FOR SALE: $250 CATEGORY: Junior Award ARTIST’S STATEMENT This year I did not go with wearable, instead I went with a sailing ship like the Batavia. (PS, there’s a letter hidden on this ship, keep an eye out for it.)

ARTWORK TITLE: Eco Warrior ARTIST: Nicola Fraser FOR SALE: $400 CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam Recycling + Wearable Art ARTIST’S STATEMENT This fierce proud Indian chief started out because I wanted to make a headdress as it’s a wearable item and I feel the American Indians are extraordinary with their understanding of nature and how to live harmoniously within nature. So for me it was fitting to be able to make his headdress out of 100% rubbish. Nothing except glue was used to create this piece. I hope to bring awareness of the rubbish we waste with single use plastics. And hope that everyone can and will do their bit to save + protect our planet for the generations to come, as the American Indians did.

ARTWORK TITLE: Fish in Motion ARTIST: Lachlan Ramsay age 10 FOR SALE: Not for Sale CATEGORY: Flotsam and Jetsam + Junior Award ARTIST’S STATEMENT When I thought of animals in the Abrolhos, I thought of a fish, because it is an easy shape to sculpt. I like the idea of using rope as scales because it has a similar texture.
